For the busy marketing executive, the sudden availability of business card readers is a welcome development. PENPOWER’s WorldCard Color is one such device that offers a no-frills approach to digitising business / visiting cards. It’s bundled with seemingly intelligent software that recognises details from cards—company and person’s name, address, phone number, e-mail ID and Web site. Scanning and extracting these details takes about 10 seconds per card. The device installed without a hitch when we tested it on Windows XP. The software is intuitive, and bundles along features such as a Mail To the e-mail ID that was read, Go To the Web site, a powerful search feature, alphabetical sorting, and even the capability to read from an image file! With a resolution of 600 dpi, it can even be used a regular scanner for small (A6) documents such as ID cards, driver’s licenses and so forth.
